What it is
Professional whitening lightens the natural colour of your teeth using peroxide-based gels that act on the pigments within the enamel and dentine. Unlike “do-it-yourself” remedies, it is carried out under dental supervision: this makes it effective and safe, with the right concentration and proper protection of the tissues.
When it’s needed
- Teeth that have yellowed or darkened over time, or through coffee, tea, wine or smoking.
- A wish for a brighter smile, perhaps ahead of a special occasion.
- To even out the colour after orthodontic treatment.
- As a finishing cosmetic step, before replacing fillings or front veneers (to choose the right shade).
How we treat it
- Assessment. We check that the teeth and gums are healthy: any decay or gum inflammation must be treated first. We record the starting shade.
- Preliminary cleaning. A professional clean is usually carried out first, so that the whitening works evenly.
- In-practice whitening. We protect the gums and lips, then apply the professional gel, activated with a lamp where appropriate. The result is immediate and visible.
- At-home whitening (optional). Custom-made trays with a low-concentration gel to use at home for a few days, to enhance and prolong the result.
- Maintenance. Advice on diet and oral care to keep the effect for as long as possible, along with any periodic top-ups.
Benefits
- A visible result, tailored to the shade you want.
- Safe for the enamel, because it is carried out under professional supervision.
- Gums protected throughout the treatment.
- A long-lasting effect, especially when combined with good habits.
FAQ
Does whitening damage the teeth?
No, not when it is done professionally. The products and concentrations are carefully calibrated and the tissues are protected. It is unsupervised “do-it-yourself” whitening that carries the risk.
Might I have sensitivity afterwards?
Temporary sensitivity to cold is possible and settles within a few days; we use techniques and desensitising products to keep it to a minimum.
How long does the result last?
From several months to a few years, depending on your habits (coffee, smoking). It can be refreshed with short at-home top-ups.
Does it whiten fillings, crowns and veneers too?
No: artificial materials do not change colour. For this reason, if any are planned, they are redone after whitening to match the new shade.
