What it is
Professional oral hygiene (scaling, or a “dental clean”) is an appointment during which the dental hygienist removes bacterial plaque, tartar and staining from the surface of the teeth and from the gum line. It is the cornerstone of prevention: keeping bacteria levels low prevents inflamed gums and the formation of decay.
When it’s needed
- As a routine check, usually every 6 to 12 months depending on your risk profile.
- When your gums bleed, are swollen or red.
- When you notice visible tartar or persistent bad breath.
- Before orthodontic, prosthetic or implant treatment.
- During pregnancy, when the gums are more sensitive (with your obstetrician’s approval).
How we treat it
- Initial assessment. We check the gums, plaque and tartar and, where necessary, carry out periodontal probing to measure the health of the gum line.
- Ultrasonic scaling. We remove tartar above and below the gum line with gentle ultrasonic tips, which break up the deposits without damaging the enamel.
- Air polishing. A jet of air, water and low-abrasion powder removes staining from coffee, tea and smoking, leaving the surface smooth.
- Polishing. The surfaces are polished to slow the build-up of plaque.
- Personalised advice. We show you the brushing technique best suited to you and how to use dental floss and interdental brushes, with a recall appointment tailored to your needs.
Benefits
- Prevent decay and gum disease (gingivitis and periodontitis).
- Healthier gums that stop bleeding.
- A brighter smile, free from surface stains.
- Fresher breath and a lower risk of losing teeth over time.
FAQ
Is a dental clean painful?
Generally not. There may be slight sensitivity, especially if the gums are inflamed; it is manageable and eases with regular cleaning.
How often should I have it done?
Usually every 6 months, but anyone at higher risk (periodontitis, smoking, braces) may need more frequent recalls. We’ll advise you case by case.
Does scaling damage the enamel?
No. Ultrasonic scalers and low-abrasion powders remove the deposits without damaging the enamel.
Will my teeth be whiter after the clean?
Surface stains are removed, so the teeth look cleaner and brighter. To lighten the natural colour, however, you would need whitening.
